{"id":448,"date":"2019-07-16T10:52:35","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T16:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.therobbinsgroup.com\/blog\/?p=448"},"modified":"2019-07-16T10:52:35","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T16:52:35","slug":"use-the-correct-word-please","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therobbinsgroup.com\/blog\/use-the-correct-word-please\/","title":{"rendered":"Use The Correct Word, Please!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It drives me crazy to not only read the wrong word being used but to <em>hear<\/em> the wrong word being used.\u00a0 I know, it&#8217;s a small thing and I shouldn&#8217;t let it bother me, yet it does.\u00a0 The English language provides a multitudes of words to use in just about any situation imaginable, so for me it is hard to imagine using the wrong word, when there is a correct word for the taking.\u00a0 I have gathered a collection of the most frequent offenders, see if you find any that you, are perhaps guilty of&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further\/Farther<\/strong>&#8212; Further your mind, Farther is distance<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\/Which<\/strong> &#8212; Oh this one is a bugger. There is a fairly\u00a0easy way to remember the difference between that and which: If removing the words that follow would change the meaning of the sentence, use &#8220;that.&#8221; Otherwise, &#8220;which&#8221; is fine. There are some people who will say that the rules are more complex and flexible than this, but let&#8217;s keep it simple and say you use <em>that<\/em> before a restrictive clause and <em>which<\/em> before everything else.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Me and I<\/strong> \u2013 when to use me and when to use I. Full disclosure &#8211; I do occasional slip up on this one. But here is the test: 1. Harry and I went to the movies. Test: I went to the movies. (Correct!) 2. Jake invited Brian and I over fo<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-449\" style=\"background-color: transparent; color: #333333; float: right; font-family: Georgia,&amp;quot; times new roman&amp;quot;,&amp;quot;bitstream charter&amp;quot;,times,serif; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; height: 192px; letter-spacing: normal; max-width: 826px; orphans: 2; outline-color: #72777c; outline-style: solid; outline-width: 1px; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; margin: 8px 0px 8px 16px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.therobbinsgroup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/anguish-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Use to Correct Word!\" width=\"192\" height=\"192\" \/>r drinks. Test: Jake invited I over for drinks.
